BOWIE, MD  – Last month, the University System of Maryland board of regents named Aminta Hawkins Breaux as the next president of Bowie State University.

Breaux, who currently is the vice president for advancement at Millersville University, will begin her tenure as the university’s tenth president on July 1. She will succeed current President Mickey Burnim, who announced his retirement in September.

Today, the university held a welcome reception on Tuesday morning where students and faculty got to interact with the incoming president.

Breaux outlined a broad plan for her tenure that will put a premium on teamwork, partnership and getting faculty members and students the kind of resources they will need, according to a source.

“Each day, I will part of this team striving to have a positive impact on the campus and the community and I will work tirelessly to advance the mission of Bowie State University and ensure that our students have very opportunity to succeed,” Breaux said.

She also plans to enlist the help of those in the area surrounding the campus.

“I need to reach out to the business community, the government agencies and see how we can partner so our students can have the kind of rich experiences our students at Bowie State have had for the last 150 years.”

Breaux has a bachelor’s and a doctoral degree from Temple University, as well as a master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania. As vice president for advancement at Millersville University, she oversaw the university’s endowment grow from about $30 million to $40 million. She also served at Millersville’s vice president for student affairs, as well as dean of students at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and assistant provost of Drexel University.

According to the Capital Gazette, it was Breaux’s variety of experiences in higher education that made her the top candidate to the Board of Regents for the University System of Maryland, which oversaw the search and selection process.

“She has a broad range of backgrounds – academics, student affairs, advancement,” said Robert L. Caret, the chancellor of the University System of Maryland. “It’s a long list of leadership efforts she has been involved with on those three campuses. We believe she has all the skills to hit the road running.”

Breaux states that she’s deeply honored and delighted to be selected as the next president of Bowie State University and to have the opportunity to build on its rich history and legacy.

Welcome another prominent lady leader to the helm of an HBCU institution, HCF wishes Dr. Breaux a superlative tenure in moving Bowie State forward!
